"We finally beat him! OMG that was hard!"
Gameplay
Remnant gameplay is amazing. That’s all. Next section.
Kidding, but really, this game plays smooth. It keeps a nice balance between melee and shooting, which is a difficult line to walk. Most games lean way toward one or the other. Remnant is definitely a shooter, don’t get me wrong, but you could play most of it as a melee game if you wanted to.
Starting out, you choose between 3 classes (Hunter, Ex-Cultist, and Scrapper) which determines your starting weapons, abilities, and look. Don’t fret, you’re not choosing a Pokemon. This choice is incredibly easy to reconcile, provided you don’t like your choice. You can purchase the other classes’ abilities and weapons a short way down the road, and you will be changing armor fairly quickly as well.
Remnant feels an awful lot like a Dark Souls game. By that, I mean, dodge! Dodging is the absolute number one most useful mechanic in this game. There are some encounters that you will lose if you don’t master dodging.
Weapons have a mod slot where you can add a special ability. Some of those abilities are fire damage, a healing aura, a noob-tube, and many more. Some weapons come with mods already installed and they can’t be removed. There are SO. MANY. WEAPONS. I’ve had so much fun just experimenting with the different kinds of weapons. Some weapons work better on certain enemies and others do diddly-squat due to the type of damage they deal.
Melee weapons can be upgraded to increase strength. Higher-level melee weapons will have perks like healing you while doing damage to enemies. Different weapons come with their own fighting styles, so that’s something to consider when choosing which weapon to take into battle.

Boss battles are incredibly hard. Most of them depend on skill rather than equipment, so they’re super rewarding to beat.
The game is true co-op. What I mean by true co-op is that everything is done together. It’s our progress, comrade . An example of “untrue” co-op would be Fallout 76, where you each have to do the missions and dialogue choices yourself. If your buddy chooses to kill the person instead of take the diplomatic option, you’re screwed out of your mission progress until that NPC loads back in (so dumb). The dialogue is left up to the person who interacted first and the party gets to discuss what they all would like to do. Every piece of scrap (money) is duplicated and stored in each player’s inventory, as well as new weapons and armor. Pretty dope!
Setting
Remnant takes place on multiple different “worlds”. Your character will start out on Earth and shortly make their way over to The Labyrinth, a place that acts as an intersection between all of the worlds. It’s about as cool as you’re thinking right now. Floating islands and staircases that appear as you walk up to them. Next, you will find yourself on Rhom. Rhom feels like the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Detroit covered in sand. The new inhabitants have build primitive villages in the ruins. Again, pretty cool. After talking to a very big, very intimidating alien, you will find yourself on Corsus. Corsus is my least favorite because it’s one big swamp. You fight and explore in knee-high red “water” pretty much the whole time. Also, this world contains one of the most difficult bosses in the game: Ixillis. I won’t get started on that boss but think Moonlight Butterfly from Dark Souls. After defeating Ixillis 1&2 (oh, did I forget to mention there are two?), you will make your way to Yaesha. Yaesha is a jungle world with enemies that annoyingly dodge everything. This world is a nice change of pace because the enemies are much more advanced AI. This world also reveals a lot of backstory, so don’t skip over questions you can ask the NPCs!
You are free to travel to any world at any time and take paths that you forgot earlier, take down bosses you missed, or just loot up the streets. You also have access to Ward 13, which is your home base. It’s technically on Earth and doesn’t count as a world, but it is a place you can travel to and explore.

I’d also like to mention that the layout of each map changes with your play-throughs. There are some elements that remain the same no matter what due to the story, but the dungeons and side-bosses are completely different the 2nd time through.
With new side-bosses comes new weapons and mods for those weapons. This feature keeps the game captivating and challenging.
Story
The story starts off with your character crashing a boat onto land and being defeated by Root creatures, who have invaded and nearly decimated Earth.
You’re rescued by Ward 13 residents and taken to the Ward. Once you’re there, you’re tasked with finding the Ward’s leader, Ford. This task takes you to the different worlds mentioned above and reveals some incredible lore.
Eventually, you will find Ford and he will help you find a way to rid the earth of the Root.
I tried to leave out as many details as possible because the story is amazing. There is a ton more to the story, but I want you to experience it for yourself.
I want to give this game a 9/10 because some of the bosses are way too difficult (even if you grind and upgrade), but that’s not a good enough reason to knock that last star off.
Remnant: From The Ashes has everything I want in a game like this. 10/10
